Speeches, 1961-1968.

The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is advocating a position on specific issues that is expressed through speeches and addresses to various groups, organizations, and at special events. This series consists of speeches, drafts of speeches, statements, and transcripts of interviews given by Governor George C. Wallace. Many of the addresses were delivered to members of the Alabama legislature. Other state organizations regularly addressed by the governor include the Alabama Press Association, the Alabama Education Association, the State Safety Coordinating Committee, the Governor's Traffic Safety Conference, and participants of the Veterans day program in Birmingham, Alabama. Governor Wallace also appeared before various church and civic organizations, and at ground breaking ceremonies for major construction projects such as Millers Ferry Dam, Claiborne Lock and Dam, and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company's Research and Engineering Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Most of his in-state addresses deal with civil rights issues and events, education, economic growth, state highways, and traffic safety. Wallace presented numerous speeches to audiences outside the state of Alabama. He appeared several times on "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation." The speeches, statements, and interviews reflect Wallace's stand on segregation, the civil rights movement, and state's rights. In 1963 Nov. the Alabama governor conducted a brief speaking tour of Ivy League colleges. During his administration he spoke at gatherings in South Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, New Jersey, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. Wallace even addressed the Lions International Convention in Toronto, Canada. This series contains several speeches and statements attributed to Wallace. In addition to the original copy of his 1963 inaugural address, the statement read by the governor when he stood in the doorway at the University of Alabama is included. Alabama law prohibited a governor from serving consecutive terms. When attempts to change this law failed, George Wallace responded by announcing that his wife, Lurleen B. Wallace, would run for governor in his place. His statement announcing her candidacy and his speech at her inauguration in 1967 Jan are included with these records.
